Red Sox 4th — Schang doubled to left on an 0-2 pitch. McInnis safe on bunt attempt, Schang initially safe at third, but overslid the base and was tagged out. Ruth hits an 0-2 pitch for a home run into the upper deck (his 2nd HR of the season). Modgridge appeared flustered. Scott doubled. Agnew singled, Scott scored, Agnew out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Yankees 4th — Baker singled to center. Pratt walked, Baker to second. Pipp singled, Baker to third, Pratt to second. Bodie singled to left, Baker and Pratt scored; Schang threw wildly to third and Agnew threw wildly to Ruth at home, Pipp scored, Bodie to third. Miller hit by a pitch. Miller stole second (no play). Hannah safe on fielder’s choice, Bodie out at home second to catcher, Miller to third. Mogridge safe on fielder’s choice, Miller out at home second to catcher, Hannah to second. Gilhooley flied out to left.

Yankees 5th — Peckinpaugh led off with a single to right. Baker safe at first on an error by Hooper in right field. Pratt grounded out to first, Peckinpaugh tot hird, Baker to second. Pipp walked; ball 4 was a wild pitch, Peckinpaugh scored, Baker to third. Bodie lined a double to right, Baker and Pipp scored. Sam Jones relieved Mays and got the next two outs.

Yankees 7th — Baker singled to right. Pratt grounded into a fielder’s choice, Baker out at second. Pipp doubled to left, Pratt to third. Bodie doubled to right, Pratt and Pipp scored. Miller flied out to center. Hannah singled to right, Bodie scored. 

Yankees 8th — Gilhooley walked, and was thrown out trying to steal second. Peckinpaugh walked. Baker doubled to left, Peckinpaugh to third. Pratt hit sacrifice fly to right, Peckinpaugh scored.

Notes:

This was a historic game as Babe Ruth played first base and batted 6th — the first time he had appeared in a game other than as a pitcher or pinch-hitter and the first time he batted any spot other than 9th.

Ruth hit his second home run of the year — 5 of his 11 career homers have come at the Polo grounds. Paul Shannon of the Boston Post began his game story: “Babe Ruth still remains the hitting idol of the Polo Grounds.”

The game began at 3:45 pm.

Hooper has a seven-game hitting streak (14-28, .500); season average at .410.
