Red Sox fall to Twins, 3-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Twins centerfielder Torii Hunter broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the seventh inning to help give Minnesota a 3-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox Saturday at Hammond Stadium.

Hunter’s homer, his third of the spring, came against Boston’s Willie Banks on a 2-1 curveball and sailed deep over the left field wall. The Twins added a third run when Boston’s Casey Fossum threw a wild pitch that scored Luis Rivas.

Mike Jackson pitched two innings and earned the win while Banks took the loss. Eddie Guardado pitched a hitless ninth to earn the save. Darren Oliver, battling for the fifth spot in the Red Sox rotation, started and threw five scoreless innings to lower his spring ERA to 0.69.

Red Sox watch:

Pedro Martinez will be limited to 60 pitches in his final spring start, next Wednesday against Cincinnati at City of Palms. “We probably won’t stretch him out a long ways on Wednesday, 55 or 60 pitches. Just get him ready to start on Opening Day,” said manager Grady Little, who added the limit is a precaution until the ace is “clear in his mind” that he is fully healthy. Martinez is still slated to start the season opener. Little added that he will leave camp with 11 pitchers.

The Red Sox announced five roster moves prior to Saturday’s game with Minnesota. Left-handed pitcher Butch Henry and infielder Quilvio Veras were released. “We felt we weren’t going to have a place for [Veras] not only coming out of Spring Training but later in the season, either,” said Little. “Out of fairness to him, we thought this was the right thing to do. This is an important week for him as far as latching on somewhere else.”

Infielder Juan Diaz and outfielder Dernell Stenson were optioned to the minor leagues while outfielder Damon Buford was returned to minor league camp. “We’ve made these moves to start thinning down and get 25 people to go north with,” said Little, who now has 34 players in camp. “There’s a lot of difference between the Major Leagues and the minor leagues and [Buford] wants to be in the Major Leagues, and I’m sure he will later in the season, either with us or someone else.”

The Buford and Stenson moves leave Boston with five outfielders and all but assure Michael Coleman of a spot on the 25-man roster when the club breaks camp. “We have still have some moves to make,” said Little, who would not guarantee Coleman’s spot.

Little said left-hander Jeff Wallace will likely remain in Florida for extended Spring Training to regain strength in his left elbow.
