Sox lose by a Little — New manager dresses, but does not manage
Associated Press

JUPITER, Fla. — Jose Canseco homered along with Chris Truby, obtained from Houston a day earlier, as the Montreal Expos beat the Boston Red Sox 6-5 Wednesday.

Grady Little, hired Monday as Boston’s manager, was in uniform for the first time and observed from the bench, leaving interim manager Mike Cubbage to run the game. Little intends to take over managing on Thursday.

Canseco homered leading off the fourth. Jose Offerman homered twice and Doug Mirabelli once for Boston.

Truby, swapped for Geoff Blum in the Expos’ first trade since major league baseball took over operation of the team, arrived at Montreal’s training camp about 3.5 hours before gametime.

The 28-year-old third baseman told manager Frank Robinson he was ready play and immediately was put in the starting lineup.

“I’m excited to be here,” Truby said. “I know several guys on this team, playing with and against them. It’s good to be around good players. But it’s the first time I’ve been traded. I spent 10 spring trainings with the Astros, and I have a lot of friends over there. But that’s the business part of baseball.”

Expos third baseman Fernando Tatis still is recovering from knee and shoulder injuries, and Andy Tracy is 0-for-20 this spring, which gives Truby a chance to start.

“I think we’ll keep him,” Robinson said. “It’s nice to see any time a guy comes to a new club and starts off good. It helps relax him a little bit.”

Montreal starter Javier Vazquez allowed three runs, four hits and two walks in three innings, and struck out five. “I just didn’t have my good fastball today,” he said.

Ed Vosberg allowed one run and two hits in two innings. Former Expos Dustin Hermanson, the loser, gave up five runs and seven hits in 3 1-3 innings.
