Partial play-by-play:

Twins 1st: Castillo pitched a perfect inning.

Twins 2nd: Todd Sears was safe when his grounder went through Lou Merloni’s legs. Doug Mientkiewicz then drove the first pitch he saw from Rolando Arrojo over the right field fence, just inside the foul pole.

Twins 3rd: Jay Canizaro high fly ball to the track in right hit off Ramirez’s glove for an error. One out later, Brian Buchanan drove a ball over the head of a diving Carl Everett in center and came all the way around to score for an inside-the-park home run.

Twins 4th: Casey Blake reached on an error by Chris Stynes. Mientkiewicz followed with his second hit of the game. Blake scored on when Chad Allen grounded into a 4-6-3 double-play.

Red Sox 4th: With Dante Bichette on base, Troy O’Leary connected on a 2-2 pitch from Brandon Knight for a home run that landed well beyond the palm trees in right center field.

Twins 5th: With one out, Canizaro reached base on Merloni’s second error. Canizaro scored on Bobby Kielty’s double. One out later, Sears’s single, a looping liner to center in front of Everett, scored Kielty.

Jimy Williams replaced all his position players after the fifth with the score 8-2.

Twins 6th: Craig Grebeck made the first of his two errors in the inning when he booted a grounder hit by Mientkiewicz. Minnesota added three more unearned tallies on a sacrifice fly by Denny Hocking, a single by Canizaro and a sacrifice fly from Kielty. During the inning, Todd Sears was hit by a Bryan Ward pitch.

Red Sox 6th: Bichette’s single to center scored Darren Lewis and Trot Nixon.

Twins 7th: Facing southpaw Allen McDill, Mientkiewicz blasted his second long ball of the night beyond the right field wall. It was Minnesota’s only earned run off Boston pitching.

Red Sox 7th: Lewis hit a home run to left with two outs off right-hander Bob Wells.

Twins 9th: The seventh and final Red Sox error came with two outs and no one on when Mike Lansing threw low to Morgan Burkhart at first base. It was the only miscue that didn’t lead to a Twins run.

Ramirez made an error on a routine fly ball to right on his second chance. He went 0-for-2 at the plate, grounding to third and striking out.
