Evers Out of Game with Tonsilitis and Fisher Plays Second Base —
Jaynes Pitches Well for Varsity

The Boston Red Sox have regained some of the cockiness that was theirs before they bumped into that 3 to 2 defeat by Brooklyn, for today at Majestic Park they won the first scramble of the spring training with the Yannigans. The count was 2 to 1 after seven innings of good ball. Manager Barrow put the players through a genuine workout today. He had them doing the usual fielding stunts and bunting game and about noon time sent them of their way in the reg-yan contest.
Dick Gets Poor Start
The regulars were without the services of Johnny Evers, who is suffering with a sore throat, which a doctor in Little Rock said was a slight attack of tonsilitis. Bobby Fisher played second base for the regulars and with George Whiteman win left field the line-up was the same as has been used so far against the Dodgers.
Lona Jaynes, lonesome as the boys call him, was shot into pitch for the regulars. It was really the first test that this burly, quiet youngster has been given, and be it said to his credit, he measured up to high speed.
Dick McCabe picked for the Yannigans and had Dick not bumped into a tough first inning, they might have been battling yet if it were let go to a finish. The regulars with all their hitting strength could get to Dick for only six safeties, which shows that the boy was putting a lot of stuff on the ball. The Brooklyn second stringers have not shown anything as good.
Jaynes, who hasn’t been displaying any unusual ability heretofore, twirled in fine fashion and when it was over three measley little hits were all the yans could get off him.
It maybe said by the regulars that the Yanks couldn’t be expected to gather many base hits, with such a patched-up line-up, but that is far from a proper idea of the Yans’ strength. Babe Ruth and Carl Mays are two pitchers who believe in getting base hits just as much as the regulars do, and Joe Bush is one of the best all-around baseball players the club boasts.
Babe Taps One Easy
Ruth got one base hit, but it wasn’t one of the long smashes that has made him famous. Lona positively refused to give him the kind of a ball that he would have rapped over the fence.
As was said, the regulars put over their two runs in the first inning, before McCabe really started to work. Hooper opened with a base hit and after Scott had flied out, Strunk laid down a beautiful bunt and beat it to first. Both men moved along when McInnis grounded out to Ruth at first base, and the pair scored a moment later when Hobby came through with a fine single.
In the next three innings the regs went down in order, and although they broke in with a few hits here and there in the last two innings, there wasn’t anything like a rally.
The yans missed a good chance in the fifth to put the game away. Ruth singled and Bush followed with another safety, putting two men on without an out. Jaynes settled down and Mays was out on a force play at second and Dan Howley hit into a double play, McInnis to Fisher to Hobby.
The one yan run of the day came in the next inning, when Smith walked and Thomas smashed a triple that brought him home.
